Since 1935, Handlbauer has stood for craftsmanship, high standards and a deep connection to the region. What once began as a small abattoir with an adjoining butcher's shop and inn has developed over the decades into a modern meat processing company of national and international importance. We are driven by the highest standards of care, reliability and transparency in every step of our work - for the retail trade, catering trade and consumers.

Our many years of experience in supplying domestic and foreign markets guarantee reliability, top quality and just-in-time delivery. Handlbauer means market and export expertise for many countries around the world. Over 20,000 farmers, mainly from Upper Austria and Lower Austria, supply the individual abattoirs with quality pigs and cattle. With an export share of around 45 %, the Handlbauer Group is one of the largest exporters of meat in Austria. Herbert Handlbauer GmbH specialises in cattle and pig slaughtering, coarse cutting and fine cutting. With a storage capacity of around 3000 tonnes, the Handlbauer Group is able to compensate for seasonal fluctuations and guarantee a continuous supply. The Handlbauer Group employs over 250 people.

Our history - Roots. Growth. Diversity.

The Handlbauer company was founded in 1935 by Josef Handlbauer in Steinhaus, Upper Austria - initially as an abattoir with a butcher's shop and its own inn. In 1970, Herbert Handlbauer took over his father's business and began to expand five years later: in 1975, an export slaughterhouse with a deep-freeze store was built in Wels.

The expansion continued: in 1996, Handlbauer took over the abattoirs in Linz and Lambrechten, followed by further abattoirs in Pregarten with self-service production and in Baumgartenberg (pig slaughterhouse). 

The Handlbauer Group is now successfully managed by the third generation. The main markets are Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Romania, Bulgaria, the Balkans, Asia (Korea, Japan, the Philippines, etc.), etc.
